Christmas Tree Preservation

Now that you have your fresh Christmas tree, you must ensure that it looks full and perky throughout all the holiday festivities! Whether it’s large or small, here are a few tips to help you keep your tree looking great.

Trim the trunk – Unless you’ve cut the tree down yourself, you’ll need to take off about an inch from the Beautiful_christmas_treebottom of the trunk to improve water uptake. Once you’ve done that, immediately place the tree in water.

Watering – make sure that there is always enough water in the tree stand; it can be thirsty work holding up all your lights and ornaments! If the base of the tree goes too long without water it will become crusted over with sap, which will prevent it from absorbing water when you refill the stand. Because it can be hard to reach the stand to add water, one simple trick is to buy several feet of plastic tubing and a funnel; tuck on end of the tube in the tree stand and place the other end on the funnel and voila! easy watering all season!

Prolong® – By keeping your tree watered with Prolong®, you will find that the tree will retain its needles longer in the dry heat of your winter home. This fabulous additive encourages a cut tree to absorb more water than it would normally, thus extending the life of the tree.

Lights – All trees become drier as they age, so it is important to make sure that there are no exposed electrical wires on your light strands and to remember to unplug all electrical decorations each night. No one wants their Christmas tree going up in flames!
